This year we had our first casita at SXSW! We had an incredible turnout. Our lineup included great speakers and musical performances by Mariachi Las Coronelas, Doris Anahí, DJ Soundeli, and Luna Luna. And muralist Fabian Rey created one-of-a-kind art!

We had some incredible platicas from:

  • Congressman Joaquin Castro and Austin City Council Member Vanessa Fuentes
  • Leaders like Alexis McGill Johnson, Robyn Moreno, Gloria Gonzales-Dholakia, and Estuardo Rodriguez
  • Actors and Activists like Annie Gonzalez and Mía Maestro

We are also proud to see many Latinx winners at SXSW, including our friends and OneFifty directors on their recent awards and recognitions:

  • Iliana Sosa for winning both the Fandor New Voices Award and the Louis Black “Lone Star” Award at this year’s SXSW for her documentary feature WHAT WE LEAVE BEHIND
  • Elaine Del Valle for her SXSW Audience Award for Best Pilot for her episodic drama BROWNSVILLE BRED

Finally, we held the Latina Power Pipeline Panel. Did you know that only three Latinas worked as directors from 2007–2019, and only 7% of films from this period featured a Latinx lead or co-lead? Even with Latinx audiences leading the charge at the box office, representation in front of and behind the camera does not reflect community realities in terms of numbers or growth. This is one of the issues The Latinx House is tackling head-on.

Watch the Latina Power Pipeline Panel with our co-founder Mónica Ramírez and award-winning directors Elaine Del Valle, Mía Maestro, and Iliana Sosa.

This talented group of Latina creators, activists, and filmmakers discuss solutions to Hollywood’s Latinx diversity problem and what they’re each doing to address it in their respective careers.
